If you sit down to study and look up an hour later still scrolling, you are not lazy. Short-form video feeds are built to be hard to stop: every swipe brings something new in a couple of seconds, there is no natural ending, and your brain learns to reach for that reward whenever a task feels hard.
The usual advice is to delete the apps or use more willpower. That works for some people, for a while. A more reliable approach is to keep the habit and change what it delivers.
Why doomscrolling is so hard to quit
A habit has three parts: a cue (boredom, a hard paragraph, a notification), a routine (open the app, swipe) and a reward (something new and mildly interesting). Removing the app removes the routine, but the cue and the craving are still there, so you end up opening another app instead.
If you replace the routine with something that gives a similar reward, the habit has somewhere to go.
Replace the feed, don't fight it
Here is what that looks like in practice:
- Put your study material in a feed. An app like DoomStudy turns your PDFs, slides and notes into short cards you swipe through, just like TikTok or Reels.
- Put that app where your social apps used to be. Same spot on the home screen, same thumb movement.
- Use the moments you would scroll anyway. Waiting for the bus, between classes, the first five minutes in bed. These are exactly the times a feed is easy to open.
- Keep the cards short. One fact, one concept or one question per screen keeps the "something new every swipe" feeling.
Make every few swipes a question
Scrolling facts is better than scrolling memes, but the biggest gain comes from testing yourself. Answering a question from memory, called active recall, strengthens memory much more than rereading. DoomStudy mixes multiple-choice and true/false questions into your feed so you practise retrieval without setting up a quiz.
Small sessions add up
Ten minutes of swiping through your own course material, five or six times a day, is close to an hour of review, spread out in a way that helps you remember. You do not need a perfect study schedule to get that. You just need the feed you open by reflex to be the useful one.
Quick checklist
- Move social apps off your home screen and put your study feed in their place
- Turn off non-essential notifications during study blocks
- Upload the files for your next exam first, so the feed matches what you need now
- Treat every quiz card as a mini test: answer before you reveal
DoomStudy is free on iPhone, iPad and Android. Upload your notes once and your next scroll session becomes revision.
